The Dell PowerEdge R8822 is the first NVIDIA Vera CPU server from Dell, an air-cooled 2U box with two Vera sockets that fits a standard 19-inch rack. Dell announced it in Berlin on 21 October 2026 and said it would be available in October 2026. A 256-CPU rack, the PowerEdge M9882, follows in the first quarter of 2027. Supermicro put its own Vera CPU rack up for quotes on 22 October 2026.
The new Vera CPU models, by name
| Vendor | Model | What it is | Availability (vendor statement) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dell | PowerEdge R8822 | 2U, two-socket, air-cooled, up to four double-wide GPUs | "Available this month" (release of 21 October 2026) |
| Dell | PowerEdge M9882 | 256 Vera CPUs in one 48U rack | Q1 calendar 2027 |
| Supermicro | NVIDIA Vera CPU rack (no SKU published) | 256 Vera CPUs, 100% liquid-cooled, third-generation NVIDIA MGX | Available to quote now (release of 22 October 2026) |
| HPE | ProLiant Compute DL394 Gen12 | 2U Vera CPU server | Announced in June 2026, expected "later this year" per ChannelLife on 2 June 2026 |
Dell's release gives no core count, memory size or price for the R8822. StorageReview, writing on 21 October 2026, says the R8822 is the first of the new PowerEdge platforms to reach customers and lists its target work as agent orchestration, sandboxing, reinforcement learning, and data processing and analytics.
Supermicro gave no model number for its rack. Its release says the rack holds 256 Vera CPUs with 22,528 cores and 45,056 threads, supports up to 22,500 concurrent agent sandboxes, uses NVIDIA BlueField-4 DPUs, and can take a normal AC feed or an 800 VDC sidecar power rack with battery backup units. Supermicro chief executive Charles Liang says in the same release that the company's Vera CPU line also includes air-cooled 1U and 2U systems. No names or specs for those were published, so ask your Supermicro reseller for the SKU list before you quote one.
What the NVIDIA Vera CPU is
Vera is NVIDIA's own Arm CPU. NVIDIA's product page lists these specs:
- 88 custom Olympus cores, 176 threads through NVIDIA Spatial Multithreading
- LPDDR5X memory on SOCAMM modules, which NVIDIA describes as detachable and field-replaceable
- Up to 1.5 TB of memory and up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth per CPU
- NVLink-C2C at up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent bandwidth to NVIDIA GPUs
- Full Arm compatibility
So a two-socket R8822 has 176 cores and 352 threads. NVIDIA's page also claims up to 1.8 times the agentic sandbox performance of "leading x86 CPUs". That is NVIDIA's own figure and the page does not give the test setup.
How Vera servers sit next to EPYC and Xeon 6 servers
For most buyers the comparison is with the 2U two-socket servers they already know, such as the Dell PowerEdge R7725 with AMD EPYC 9005 or the Dell PowerEdge R770 with Intel Xeon 6. Supermicro's equivalents in our catalog are the AS -2125HS-TNR on AMD and the SYS-221H-TNR on Intel.
| Dell PowerEdge R8822 | Dell PowerEdge R7725 | Dell PowerEdge R770 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 2x NVIDIA Vera (Arm) | 2x AMD EPYC 9005 (x86) | 2x Intel Xeon 6 (x86) |
| Cores per socket | 88 | Up to 192 | Depends on the Xeon 6 part |
| Memory | LPDDR5X on SOCAMM (NVIDIA spec) | DDR5 RDIMM | DDR5 RDIMM |
| Form factor | 2U, air-cooled | 2U | 2U |
Vera uses the Arm instruction set, so operating systems, hypervisors, agents and licensed software all need Arm builds. Anything compiled only for x86 will not run on the R8822 as is.
Memory works differently too. Dell has not published the R8822 memory layout, but NVIDIA specifies Vera with LPDDR5X on SOCAMM. If it ships that way, DDR5 RDIMMs from your existing R7725 or R770 spares stock will not fit it.
Dell and Supermicro both pitch Vera at running the CPU side of agent and GPU clusters: orchestration, sandboxes, schedulers such as Slurm and Kubernetes, and databases. General x86 virtualization stays on servers such as the R7725 and R770. GPU training nodes such as the Dell PowerEdge XE9680 are a separate purchase.
What to ask a reseller before you quote a Vera CPU server
- The exact SKU and the memory configuration, in TB per CPU, and whether the modules are SOCAMM.
- A confirmed ship date. Dell said the R8822 would be available in October 2026, which is not the same as stock in your region.
- Which operating systems and hypervisors are certified on the box, and in which versions.
- Whether your monitoring, backup and security agents have Arm releases.
- For racks such as the M9882 or Supermicro's Vera rack, the cooling and power requirements, since Supermicro's rack is fully liquid-cooled.
- A written price with a date. None of the vendors published prices in their October 2026 releases.
The first Vera CPU servers are only due this month, so expect quotes for new units, with little or no used stock in 2026.
FAQ
What is the Dell PowerEdge R8822?
It is a 2U, two-socket, air-cooled Dell server built on NVIDIA Vera CPUs, with room for up to four double-wide GPUs. Dell announced it on 21 October 2026 and said it would be available that month.
When is the Dell PowerEdge M9882 available?
Dell's release of 21 October 2026 says the PowerEdge M9882, which holds 256 Vera CPUs in one 48U rack, will be available in the first quarter of calendar 2027.
How many cores does an NVIDIA Vera CPU have?
NVIDIA lists 88 Olympus cores and 176 threads per Vera CPU, with up to 1.5 TB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth.
Is the NVIDIA Vera CPU x86?
No. Vera is an Arm CPU. Software built only for x86 needs an Arm version before it can run on a Vera server.
Can I reuse DDR5 RDIMMs in a Vera CPU server?
NVIDIA specifies LPDDR5X on SOCAMM modules for Vera, so standard DDR5 RDIMMs do not apply. Dell has not yet published the R8822 memory layout, so confirm with the reseller.
Does Supermicro sell an NVIDIA Vera CPU server?
Yes. Supermicro announced a liquid-cooled rack with 256 Vera CPUs on 22 October 2026, available to quote. Its chief executive says the line also includes air-cooled 1U and 2U Vera systems, with no model names published yet.
