The HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 is a half height two socket server blade for BladeSystem c-Class enclosures. It takes Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, 16 DDR4 DIMM slots, two hot-plug drive bays and two mezzanine slots plus a FlexibleLOM adapter. The QuickSpecs is marked retired by HPE. It is a common used blade because it is cheap to fill an existing c7000 or c3000 enclosure with.

Works together

How the HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 connects to servers, storage and the network: 4 ways, with the parts and products on each path.

Fibre Channel SANiSCSI and NVMe/TCP over EthernetDirect-attached SASFile storage (NFS and SMB)

Fibre Channel SAN

Match the speed: 16Gb and 32Gb FC HBAs, switches and array ports work together, and each generation also runs one or two speeds below its own (a 32Gb port runs at 16Gb and 8Gb).

Fibre Channel SAN: how it fits together

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

Direct-attached SAS

12Gb SAS uses Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) connectors; older 6Gb gear uses Mini-SAS (SFF-8088). Adapter cables exist, but the link runs at the slower speed.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Check compatibility with HPE

Before you buy, confirm the exact configuration against the vendor's own lists: firmware levels, operating systems, adapters and optics that HPE has tested with the HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9.

Buying a used BL460c Gen9: what to check

Confirm the blade is a Gen9 and not a Gen8 or Gen10 with a similar name, and check the processor family (v3 or v4) because it decides memory speed. Look for the Smart Array controller, mezzanine cards and the Smart Storage battery, and check the firmware level supports your enclosure and Virtual Connect modules.
