File storage: servers reach NAS over NFS and SMB

A NAS or scale-out file system shares folders, not disks. Servers and clients mount them over NFS (Linux, VMware) or SMB (Windows) through normal Ethernet switches, so there is no HBA to buy and many hosts share the same files at once. Unified arrays offer file and block from the same box; scale-out systems such as PowerScale grow by adding nodes, with a separate back-end network between the nodes.

Cabling: DAC or optics with fibre.

FAQ

NAS or SAN for virtual machines?

Both work. NFS datastores are simpler to set up and grow; block storage over FC or iSCSI is the usual pick when the array's best features (snapshots, replication) are block only, or for databases that want raw volumes.

What is the back-end network on scale-out NAS?

The private network between nodes that moves data for protection and rebalancing. It runs at 25GbE to 100GbE (or InfiniBand on older systems) and must not carry client traffic.
