The Dell PowerEdge C6620 is an ultra-dense 2-socket modular compute sled that installs into the 2U four-node PowerEdge C6600 chassis. Designed for high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, electronic design automation (EDA), financial modeling, and web hosting farms, the C6600/C6620 architecture packs up to 8 processors (up to 512 physical cores) and 64 DDR5 DIMMs into just 2U of rack space. Each independent C6620 sled provides dual 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 16 DDR5 memory slots, and PCIe Gen5 expansion. Pre-owned system buyers should verify node backplane mating connectors and chassis power supply capacities.

Works together

How the Dell PowerEdge C6620 connects to servers, storage and the network: 4 ways, with the parts and products on each path.

Fibre Channel SANiSCSI and NVMe/TCP over EthernetDirect-attached SASFile storage (NFS and SMB)

Fibre Channel SAN

Match the speed: 16Gb and 32Gb FC HBAs, switches and array ports work together, and each generation also runs one or two speeds below its own (a 32Gb port runs at 16Gb and 8Gb).

Fibre Channel SAN: how it fits together

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

Direct-attached SAS

12Gb SAS uses Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) connectors; older 6Gb gear uses Mini-SAS (SFF-8088). Adapter cables exist, but the link runs at the slower speed.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Buying a used C6620: what to check

Verify whether the listing includes individual C6620 sleds or the complete 2U C6600 chassis with power supplies. Inspect blind-mate backplane connectors for bent pins.

FAQ
