The Dell PowerStore 1200T represents the second-generation refresh of Dell's mainstream mid-range all-flash array, powered by updated Intel Ice Lake Xeon processors. Delivering up to 20% higher IOPS and greater bandwidth than the preceding 1000T, the 1200T features end-to-end NVMe expansion enclosures (NVMe DAE) running over 100GbE QSFP connections instead of legacy SAS cables. The system delivers unified block, file, and vVols storage with persistent 4:1 hardware data reduction. Refurbished system purchasers should ensure NVMe expansion cabling (100GbE direct-attach copper) is supplied when buying multi-enclosure systems.

Generations

Works together

How the Dell PowerStore 1200T connects to servers, storage and the network: 3 ways, with the parts and products on each path.

Fibre Channel SANiSCSI and NVMe/TCP over EthernetFile storage (NFS and SMB)

Fibre Channel SAN

Match the speed: 16Gb and 32Gb FC HBAs, switches and array ports work together, and each generation also runs one or two speeds below its own (a 32Gb port runs at 16Gb and 8Gb).

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Plan and size it

Power draw of the Dell PowerStore 1200T: about 820 W typical and 1380 W at full load, 2U. Measured figures on rack-density.com.

Check compatibility with Dell

Before you buy, confirm the exact configuration against the vendor's own lists: firmware levels, operating systems, adapters and optics that Dell has tested with the Dell PowerStore 1200T.

Buying a used 1200T: what to check

Verify that expansion enclosures are NVMe DAEs with 100GbE interconnect cables rather than legacy SAS DAEs. Inspect battery backup units and test all 25 front NVMe bays.

FAQ
