Hyperconverged clusters: compute and storage in the same nodes

Hyperconverged infrastructure puts the drives in the servers and lets software (vSAN, Nutanix, Azure Local, Ceph and others) pool them into shared storage. There is no separate array or SAN: every node connects to a pair of Ethernet switches, and storage replication between nodes runs over that network. The network becomes the storage fabric, so it needs low latency and enough bandwidth for rebuilds.

Cabling: DAC or optics with fibre.

FAQ

Do HCI clusters need a SAN switch?

No. HCI uses Ethernet only. What it needs is a fast, redundant pair of top-of-rack switches with low latency.

Can I turn ordinary servers into HCI?

Often yes, if the drives, controllers and NICs are on the software vendor's compatibility list. Vendor HCI nodes come pre-certified.

Buying or selling SAN, NAS and network hardware?

New, refurbished or used. Tell us the quantity and condition and we connect you with a vetted reseller in your region, usually within one working day.
