In Dell's server catalog, the R7515 succeeded the POWEREDGE-R7415 and was followed by the POWEREDGE-R7615, positioned alongside rival systems including PROLIANT-DL385-GEN10-PLUS, THINKSYSTEM-SR655.

Processor support on the R7515 utilizes 1 embedded dual storage controllers sockets with thermal heatsinks matching CPU power envelopes. System memory slots on the R7515 require DDR4-3200 RDIMM / LRDIMM modules, and mixing RDIMM with LRDIMM memory is not supported. Front backplanes on the R7515 accommodate either proprietary array drive carrier or proprietary array drive carrier trays based on chassis option. Networking on the R7515 uses optical front-end host I/O modules, and expansion cards install into Up to 4 PCIe Gen4 slots risers.
