About the P47789-B21

P47789-B21 is HPE's MR216i-o Gen11 Storage Controller, an entry-level tri-mode storage adapter engineered in the Open Compute Project (OCP) 3.0 mezzanine form factor. Powered by Broadcom MegaRAID silicon and operating without write cache, it offers 16 internal tri-mode lanes supporting SAS (12Gb/s), SATA (6Gb/s), and direct-attached NVMe U.3 SSDs. By seating in the dedicated internal OCP 3.0 slot on ProLiant Gen11 servers, it preserves all primary PCIe expansion slots for high-speed networking or acceleration cards while eliminating the expense of battery energy packs.

Compatibility

This controller installs into the internal OCP 3.0 slot of HPE ProLiant Gen11 rack servers including the DL360 Gen11, DL380 Gen11, DL385 Gen11, DL325 Gen11, and DL560 Gen11. Connection to front drive cages requires server-specific internal SlimSAS cables. Because it lacks write cache, it supports RAID 0, 1, and 10 as well as JBOD mode, but does not support parity-based RAID 5 or 6. It requires no battery or capacitor energy pack. It does not fit ProLiant Gen10 servers or standard PCIe slots. The option SKU is P47789-B21, with spare number P47954-001.

How to identify a genuine unit

A genuine P47789-B21 unit carries an HPE product label with option part number P47789-B21, spare number P47954-001, and an OCP 3.0 ejector latch with pull-tab. In iLO 6 under Storage, the device is recognized as the HPE MR216i-o Gen11 Controller, featuring DMTF SPDM security attestation and automated firmware synchronization via HPE SPP. Non-HPE generic OCP storage adapters will fail iLO security authentication and will not link with HPE Smart Storage Administrator tools.

Buying used

When acquiring pre-owned MR216i-o controllers, inspect the 4C+ OCP card edge connector pins for damage, scratching, or debris. Verify that the mechanical pull-tab mechanism and retention thumbscrew are in working order. Request a StorCLI diagnostic log from the seller showing that basic drive detection is functional and that the card passes power-on self-test.

FAQ

What is the difference between MR416i-o and MR216i-o?

The MR416i-o includes 8GB of FBWC cache and supports RAID 5/6, while the MR216i-o has no cache and supports RAID 0/1/10 and JBOD passthrough without requiring a battery.

Does MR216i-o take up a PCIe slot?

No. It installs into the dedicated rear OCP 3.0 mezzanine slot, preserving all standard PCIe riser slots for other add-in cards.
