About the P47785-B21

P47785-B21 is HPE's MR216i-p Gen11 Storage Controller, an entry-level tri-mode PCIe Gen4 x8 plug-in adapter built on Broadcom silicon without write cache. With 16 internal tri-mode lanes connecting up to 16 SAS (12Gb/s), SATA (6Gb/s), or direct-attached NVMe U.3 SSDs, it provides basic hardware RAID levels (RAID 0, 1, and 10) as well as unbuffered HBA/JBOD passthrough. Designed as an economical alternative to the premium MR416i-p, it does not require an HPE Smart Storage energy pack, making it ideal for software-defined storage (such as VMware vSAN) or simple boot and mirror configurations.

Compatibility

This standard half-height, half-length (HH/HL) PCIe card installs into standard PCIe riser slots across ProLiant Gen11 servers including the DL360 Gen11, DL380 Gen11, DL385 Gen11, DL325 Gen11, and ML350 Gen11. Connection to drive cages requires compatible internal SlimSAS cables. Because it lacks write cache memory, it does not support RAID 5 or RAID 6 and does not require energy packs or battery cables. It is not backward compatible with Gen10 or older servers. The option SKU is P47785-B21, with spare part number P47953-001.

How to identify a genuine unit

A genuine P47785-B21 carries an HPE label with option part number P47785-B21, spare number P47953-001, and Broadcom PCB identifiers on the rear circuit board. In iLO 6 under Storage, the card reports as the HPE MR216i-p Gen11 Controller, displaying DMTF SPDM security attestation and automated firmware compatibility with HPE Service Pack for ProLiant. Generic uncertified Broadcom MegaRAID cards will fail iLO security verification and will not integrate with iLO health monitoring.

Buying used

When evaluating second-hand MR216i-p controllers, verify whether the card comes with the low-profile (1U) or full-height (2U/tower) PCIe mounting bracket to match your server slot. Inspect the PCIe x8 gold edge fingers for scratches, delamination, or burn marks. Confirm that the internal SlimSAS ports are clean with undamaged spring contacts, and ask the seller to verify basic drive detection in StorCLI before purchasing.

FAQ

Does the MR216i-p support RAID 5 or RAID 6?

No. The MR216 series controllers operate without write cache and only support RAID 0, 1, and 10. RAID 5 and 6 require an MR416i controller with FBWC write cache.

Does MR216i-p require an HPE Smart Storage energy pack?

No, because this controller does not have write cache, no battery or capacitor energy pack is required.
