The HPE MSA 2040 is an enterprise 2U entry-to-midrange SAN storage system designed for growing virtualization, SQL Server, and Microsoft Exchange deployments. Providing Converged SAN controller architecture supporting 16Gb/8Gb Fibre Channel and 10GbE/1GbE iSCSI on the same hardware, the MSA 2040 was one of the earliest entry arrays to introduce sub-LUN automated SSD tiering and high-performance flash caching.

Generations

Works together

How the HPE MSA 2040 connects to servers, storage and the network: 2 ways, with the parts and products on each path.

Fibre Channel SANiSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Fibre Channel SAN

Match the speed: 16Gb and 32Gb FC HBAs, switches and array ports work together, and each generation also runs one or two speeds below its own (a 32Gb port runs at 16Gb and 8Gb).

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

FAQ

Can the MSA 2040 mix Fibre Channel and iSCSI ports?

Yes, controllers with Converged SAN ports can run Fibre Channel SFPs on one pair of ports and 10GbE iSCSI SFPs on the other pair.

How does the cache backup work during power loss?

Supercapacitors maintain power while memory contents are written to non-volatile flash memory, eliminating the need to periodically replace chemical batteries.
