About the QSFP-40G-SR4

The Cisco QSFP-40G-SR4 optical transceiver provides high bandwidth 40 Gigabit Ethernet links across parallel multimode optical ribbons. It incorporates four independent transmit and receive channels operating at 10 Gigabits per second per lane over 850 nanometer wavelengths. It reaches distances up to 100 meters over OM3 cabling and 150 meters over OM4 multimode fibre cabling.

Compatibility

Compatible with Cisco Nexus 9000, Nexus 3000, Nexus 5600, Nexus 6000, and Catalyst 9500 Series switches equipped with native 40GbE QSFP+ ports. It supports both dedicated 40 Gigabit inter-switch uplinks and 4x10GbE breakout cabling configurations connecting directly to server and storage adapters.

How to identify a genuine unit

Features a full size QSFP+ metal casing with a beige or orange pull tab release mechanism for high density port insertions. The chassis label carries the Cisco trademark logo, product designation QSFP-40G-SR4, assembly part number 10-2672-02, and optical laser safety classification markers.

Buying used

Inspect the multi-fiber MPO-12 interface with an optical fiberscope to confirm that all 12 fiber ferrule end faces are free from oil, dust, and physical chipping. Confirm that the spring loaded release tab clicks properly into the port cage and that switch monitoring logs report normal laser bias currents.

Works together

How the Cisco QSFP-40G-SR4 connects to servers, storage and the network: 3 ways, with the hardware on each path.

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Hyperconverged cluster

Plan at least two 25GbE ports per node to two switches; all-NVMe clusters often move to 100GbE.
