About the FN-TRAN-QSFP+SR

The Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP+SR optical transceiver provides high density 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for enterprise core firewall aggregation and data center backbone connections. Operating over four parallel optical lanes at 850 nanometers on multimode fibre, it supports link lengths up to 100 meters on OM3 and 150 meters on OM4 optical cabling.

Compatibility

Compatible with Fortinet FortiGate 1000D, 1200D, 1500D, 2000E, 2500E, 3000D, 3700D, 3800D, and 3960E firewalls equipped with QSFP+ ports. It supports native 40GbE fabric links as well as channelized 4x10GbE breakout mode configured via FortiOS command line interface.

How to identify a genuine unit

Constructed in a QSFP+ metallic casing with a beige or black pull tab release mechanism for port extraction. The manufacturing label displays Fortinet branding, part number FN-TRAN-QSFP+SR, alternate assembly code SP-FG-40GE-SR, individual serial number barcode, and optical laser safety warnings.

Buying used

Inspect the MPO internal optical guide pins and ferrule face with an MPO fiber scope to ensure no dust or scratches exist on any of the optical fiber lanes. Test on a QSFP+ firewall port to ensure all four optical lanes synchronize and report balanced optical power levels.

Works together

How the Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP+SR connects to servers, storage and the network: 3 ways, with the hardware on each path.

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.
