An enterprise-grade 1.2TB 10,000 RPM 2.5-inch SAS 12Gb/s mission-critical mechanical hard drive mounted in an HPE Smart Carrier (SC) tray. Compatible across HPE ProLiant Gen8 through Gen10 Plus servers and MSA storage systems, it features digitally signed firmware that prevents malicious firmware tampering and ensures accurate status LED behavior. As one of the highest-volume spinning disks ever deployed in enterprise data centers, it is widely traded on the secondary market. When sourcing pre-owned units, inspect power-on hours and reallocated sector counts via smartctl, and confirm genuine HPE firmware to prevent server fan ramp-up issues.

Specifications

About the 872479-B21

872479-B21 is HPE's 1.2TB 10,000 RPM 2.5-inch SAS 12Gb/s mission-critical hard disk drive in the Smart Carrier (SC) form factor. Manufactured on enterprise platforms such as the Seagate Enterprise Performance 10K, it represents the highest-volume spinning disk deployed across ProLiant Gen8, Gen9, Gen10, and Gen10 Plus architectures. Designed for general server storage, database transaction logs, and RAID arrays needing dense mechanical storage with predictable mechanical latency, it features HPE digitally signed firmware ensuring tamper-proof disk controller integrity.

Compatibility

This drive is compatible with small form factor (SFF) drive bays in ProLiant Gen8, Gen9, Gen10, and Gen10 Plus servers, as well as HPE MSA 1060, 2060, and 2062 SAN arrays. It requires an HPE SAS controller or Smart Array host bus adapter capable of 12Gb/s or 6Gb/s signaling. Crucially, it ships in the HPE Smart Carrier (SC), which contains integrated activity and status ring LEDs. It does NOT fit ProLiant Gen11 or Gen12 servers, which transitioned entirely to the Basic Carrier (BC) format. The option code is 872479-B21, with spare numbers 872479-001 and 873012-001.

How to identify a genuine unit

A genuine 872479-B21 drive features an HPE label with the option part number, spare part number, and HPE firmware version (such as HPD8) positioned over the original Seagate drive label. When booted in a ProLiant system, HPE iLO and Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) recognize the drive as genuine HPE hardware, displaying full telemetry and activating the Smart Carrier circular activity LED ring. Generic Seagate drives flashed with retail firmware will trigger iLO unauthenticated drive warnings and causes server fans to ramp up to high cooling velocities.

Buying used

Because 1.2TB 10K SAS drives have been widely deployed for years, used units are plentiful in the secondary market. Request SMART drive statistics showing zero reallocated sectors, zero pending sectors, and acceptable power-on hours before purchasing. Check that the Smart Carrier latch is uncracked, that the circular LED ring light pipes are intact, and confirm that the drive carries official HPE digitally signed firmware so your server operates quietly without cooling fan anomalies.
