An enterprise-grade 3.84TB SATA 6Gb/s solid state drive housed in an HPE Basic Carrier (BC) tray for ProLiant Gen11 and Gen12 servers. Typically manufactured on the Samsung PM893 or Micron 5400 PRO platform under HPE's Multi Vendor program, it delivers dense, read-optimized flash storage for cloud virtualization, big data analytics, and media streaming. When purchasing second-hand, verify flash endurance consumption in iLO and confirm genuine HPE digitally signed firmware.

Specifications

About the P40500-B21

P40500-B21 is HPE's high-capacity 3.84TB read-intensive 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive in the Basic Carrier format for ProLiant Gen11 and Gen12 enterprise servers. Sourced through HPE's Multi Vendor framework from Tier-1 flash manufacturers like Samsung (PM893 platform) and Micron, it is flashed with standardized HPE digitally signed firmware. Rated for approximately 0.8 drive writes per day (up to 3,400 TBW lifetime write endurance), it provides high-density, low-power solid state capacity for read-centric server workloads, active archiving, and virtual machine operating system datastores.

Compatibility

This drive fits small form factor (SFF) drive bays in ProLiant Gen11 and Gen12 servers including the DL360 Gen11, DL380 Gen11, DL385 Gen11, DL325 Gen11, and ML350 Gen11. It ships in the HPE Basic Carrier (BC), which cannot physically insert or latch into the older Smart Carrier (SC) bays of Gen10 and Gen9 servers. The drive operates over SATA 6Gb/s and functions behind integrated motherboard SATA controllers, dedicated Smart Array adapters, or modern tri-mode RAID controllers. The retail option SKU is P40500-B21, with spare numbers P41525-001 and P41083-001.

How to identify a genuine unit

A genuine P40500-B21 carries an HPE front label displaying the option part number, spare part number, and HPE firmware revision alongside the OEM manufacturer label from Samsung or Micron. When inspected inside iLO 6 under Storage, the drive is identified as an authentic HPE Multi Vendor SSD with official firmware rather than generic OEM retail firmware. Relabelled drives from the secondary market often exhibit misaligned adhesive labels or lack the HPE security logo printed on the carrier latch.

Buying used

When evaluating second-hand units, request SMART attributes or an iLO storage report verifying power-on hours and percentage of SSD life remaining. Because read-intensive SATA drives have lower write endurance than mixed-use alternatives, drives exhibiting more than 25 percent lifetime wear should be priced at a steep discount. Ensure the seller includes the original Gen11 Basic Carrier with functional status LEDs, as purchasing standalone carriers separately increases overall deployment costs.
