HPESSDsNVMe PCIe Gen4 U.3 (tri-mode backplane)

Also listed as: P63829-001, P65018-001, KCMYXRUG1T92 · made by Kioxia

A 1.92TB read-intensive U.3 NVMe drive for Gen11 and Gen12 ProLiant servers, built on the Kioxia CM7-R. It uses the Basic Carrier, so it does not fit the Smart Carrier bays of Gen10 and older servers. It is one of the most frequently traded HPE SSDs because it is the default boot and data drive in many Gen11 configurations. On the used market, check the wear level in iLO or with smartctl, make sure the drive carries HPE firmware (so it shows as genuine in iLO) and that the carrier is included.

About the P63829-B21

P63829-B21 is HPE's 1.92TB read-intensive NVMe drive in the Basic Carrier format introduced with ProLiant Gen11. Inside is a Kioxia CM7-R running HPE firmware. Read-intensive means it is rated for roughly one full drive write per day, which suits boot volumes, virtual machine datastores, web and database read workloads, and most general-purpose servers. Write-heavy work such as logging or database redo usually calls for the mixed-use class instead. In HPE's catalogue it sits beside the 3.84TB and 7.68TB versions of the same drive and the mixed-use NVMe options in 1.6TB and 3.2TB.

Compatibility

The drive fits Gen11 and Gen12 ProLiant servers whose small-form-factor bays are wired for NVMe, either through a tri-mode controller such as the MR408i-o or MR416i-p, or directly to the CPU through an NVMe backplane. It ships in the Basic Carrier (BC), which does not fit the Smart Carrier (SC) bays of Gen10 and Gen10 Plus. Buying a BC drive for an older server is the most common mistake with this part. A bay cabled only for SAS/SATA will not see the drive even though the carrier slides in, so check the backplane or controller configuration before ordering. The -B21 number is the orderable option kit; the -001 spare number is the same drive as supplied by HPE service.

How to identify a genuine unit

A genuine unit has an HPE label showing the option number P63829-B21 or the spare number, plus a separate Kioxia label with the drive's own model number. In iLO 6 it appears under Storage with HPE firmware and is reported as an HPE drive, not as a third-party device. A drive that iLO lists with non-HPE firmware, or one whose HPE label looks reprinted or covers the Kioxia label, has probably been relabelled from a retail drive and may not take HPE firmware updates.

Buying used

Ask the seller for a screenshot of the drive's wear level and power-on hours from iLO or smartctl, and for the firmware version. A pulled drive from a lightly used server often shows only a few percent wear and is a reasonable buy; anything above about 20 percent wear deserves a lower price. Make sure the Basic Carrier is included, because a bare drive needs a carrier sourced separately. Drives sold new in sealed HPE packaging can carry the remaining HPE warranty; pulled drives usually come with the seller's own warranty only.
