About the QSFP-100G-SR4-S

The Cisco QSFP-100G-SR4-S is an S-Class 100GBASE-SR4 optical module engineered for high-density 100 Gigabit Ethernet switch interconnects and spine-leaf architectures. It transmits over 850nm multimode optical ribbons up to 100 meters on OM4 and 70 meters on OM3 cabling using MPO-12 connectors. It provides high aggregation throughput for modern cloud data center fabrics.

Compatibility

Compatible with QSFP28 uplink ports on Cisco Nexus 9300 series switches, including Nexus 93180YC-FX and 93180YC-FX3. It supports standard 100GbE aggregation links and can also be configured in 4x25GbE breakout mode using appropriate MPO-to-LC optical breakout assemblies.

How to identify a genuine unit

Identified by an enclosed QSFP28 casing with a beige pull-tab release handle and printed Cisco product markings. The label specifies part code QSFP-100G-SR4-S, laser hazard class ratings, and serial number. Telemetry queries in Cisco NX-OS show 4 individual 25Gbps lanes with per-lane optical power readings.

Buying used

Before installing a pre-owned 100G transceiver, inspect the MPO guide pins and optical ribbon interface for dirt or physical misalignment. Confirm that the module latches cleanly into the switch cage and that NX-OS successfully trains all 4 lanes to achieve full 100Gbps line-rate transmission.

Works together

How the Cisco QSFP-100G-SR4-S connects to servers, storage and the network: 3 ways, with the hardware on each path.

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over EthernetFile storage (NFS and SMB)Hyperconverged cluster

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Hyperconverged cluster

Plan at least two 25GbE ports per node to two switches; all-NVMe clusters often move to 100GbE.
