The HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 is the 2U, two socket rack server that follows the DL380 Gen11. It takes Intel Xeon 6 processors and up to 8 TB of DDR5 memory, with PCIe Gen5 risers for GPUs and other accelerators. The front can be built as 8 SFF boxes, with an optional universal media bay or a multipurpose cage that holds EDSFF drives or an NS204i-u boot device. Management moves to iLO 7.

Works together

How the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12 connects to servers, storage and the network: 4 ways, with the parts and products on each path.

Fibre Channel SANiSCSI and NVMe/TCP over EthernetDirect-attached SASFile storage (NFS and SMB)

Fibre Channel SAN

Match the speed: 16Gb and 32Gb FC HBAs, switches and array ports work together, and each generation also runs one or two speeds below its own (a 32Gb port runs at 16Gb and 8Gb).

iSCSI and NVMe/TCP over Ethernet

Keep the speed the same at all three points: a 25GbE server, a 25GbE switch port and a 25GbE array port. Mixed speeds work but the slowest link sets the pace.

Direct-attached SAS

12Gb SAS uses Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) connectors; older 6Gb gear uses Mini-SAS (SFF-8088). Adapter cables exist, but the link runs at the slower speed.

File storage (NFS and SMB)

Front-end ports face the clients; back-end ports (on scale-out systems) connect the nodes to each other and need their own switch pair.

Check compatibility with HPE

Before you buy, confirm the exact configuration against the vendor's own lists: firmware levels, operating systems, adapters and optics that HPE has tested with the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12.

Buying a used DL380 Gen12: what to check

The model is current in the vendor documentation, so most traded units are new surplus or early lease returns. Check which front cage, riser and power supply options are fitted, because several of them are factory-only on the CTO build. Confirm the iLO 7 licence state and that the unit is not locked to a Compute Ops Management account.

FAQ
